Your Support Matters
The primary goal of the Fencing program is to provide the best student-athlete experience both on and off piste. We have created an open, inclusive and positive environment where student athletes of all experience levels feel welcomed and encouraged to improve skills and compete as individuals and train as a team. Over the past 12 years we have focused on developing the student as an athlete and a scholar our hope being that our athletes of today will be stronger individuals tomorrow. Your support will have a direct impact on their success as student-athletes and on the program.
OUA Varsity teams at the University of Guelph receive base funding from the Department of Athletics that covers OUA championship registration costs and some travel. Programs must rely upon student-athlete fees and fundraising efforts to meet the rest of their operational needs. To minimize the financial impact on student-athletes, Gryphon’s Fencing has set a goal to raise $10,000 annually to offset costs essential for the success of our program. This includes travel, accommodation, registration fees for training events, gear, and eventually a full set of scoring equipment.
Make an Impact
Funds raised will be used to purchase:
- Sport-specific equipment upgrades including new masks: $10,000
- Scoring equipment (machine, reels, wires): $1,600
- Support for travel to training competitions (4 per year): $6,000/yr
About Fencing
Fencing at U of G has taken many forms over the past 50 years. There have been individuals competing, an established club for many years and in 2022, a varsity team. Since 2012 there has been a team training several times per week and competing consistently at OUA championship events.
The team’s goal is field a complete men’s and women’s team at the OUA championship events in February each year. To prepare for the championships, we train and participate in variety of competitions throughout the fall. While we have had several individual podium finishes in the fall we have yet to see a Gryphon medal at OUAs. With your ongoing support and the full commitment of our athletes and coaches, our goal is to medal at the OUAs in the coming season.
