Women’s Basketball

Your Support Matters

Our Gryphon Women’s Basketball objective is to become better humans as we strive for excellence on and off the court. In the classroom, 80% of our team earned Academic All-Canadian honours, boasting averages higher than 80%. On the court, our league record was 16-6—the team’s best record in the last 15 years and was ranked as high as 6th Nationally! We had several outreach and charitable fundraising initiatives including working with young women in a small community “Connecting Girls Through Sport,” working with Special Olympics Basketball in Guelph, hosting Bell Let’s Talk, Shoot for the Cure and Shoot for Change (Anti-Racism) games this year. We continue to share our knowledge, expertise and time with our Jr. Gryphon Basketball partners through skills clinics, practice visits and game day visits!

U Sports Varsity teams at the University of Guelph receive operational funding from the Department of Athletics to cover the team’s operational needs. We rely on student-athlete fees and fundraising to meet the rest of our program needs; enhancements to our program and to the student-athlete experience. To minimize the financial burden on our student-athletes, Women’s Basketball has set a goal to raise $20,000 annually to offset extra costs that are essential to the success of our program.

About Women’s Basketball

Gryphon Women’s Basketball has a long history of success. Nine times since 1971 our team has advanced to the Ontario semi-finals; twice we have been champions. In 2022-23 we took another step forward in the building of this program, having the best league record since the 2006-07 OUA semifinal team. We have competed in OUA Quarterfinal matches two years in a row and have come away just short of making the semi-final. We believe we are on the right path and are encouraged to be garnering national recognition as well as international interest in our program. Our 2023-24 goal is to compete in Alberta at the National Championships in March 2024. Our strong rookie class, coupled with savvy and hungry veterans puts us very much in that conversation.
